This boot combines the stability and power of a true alpine boot with the versatility of a touring boot that lets you enjoy the whole mountain. The Salomon Shift Pro 120 is designed for skiers who love to cruise through unspoiled powder at high speed, but are tempted by the occasional escapade to hike a new peak. Use: For advanced skiers who will spend most of their time at the resort but want the possibility to go enjoy a nice powder day in the backcountry once in a while. All Ice Climbing and Mountaineering Boots.I like to do it with the gas pedal remaining firmly on the floor so I am hard on them. Like Mike, I too have banged gears with a stock toploader at up to 7K. The Toploader is such an awesome tranny that when it is fresh and properly maintained it can shift fine at that level-unlike most of the more modern TKO's. I DO only use Dan Williams gears in them, as they seem to be the best out there. I do a few oiling modifications and check gear clearances, but that's about it. I had the car out yesterday, and caught myself shifting into 3rd on the wood. but running n/a, I often shift on the wood. I don't know if you can tell from the clip above, but I generally let off a tad while switching gears. The car served as my only transportation for a number of years. I've had the car since age 15, and have shifted the thing thousand and thousands of times with the same shifter. They've both gone WAY more than that number of shifts, and still work fine. I ran my last toploader for YEARS and THOUSANDS of miles on the street and track. It can be shifted without the clutch and yet be at home on the street.Ĭlick to expand.Anyone that knows me knows that I am not easy on the car, whatsoever. The DR4 looks very similar to a toploader, but is modded for drag racing. If you are serious about wanting to maintain high speed shifting and yet have good street manners, perhaps the best thing that you could do is to replace the toploader with a Jerico DR4 with road race sliders. It is a learning experience that is OK if you are the sole driver, but don't expect the wife to want to learn it. I feel that the faceplated toploader should maintain its crispness at least a whole season, which could amount to 200+ runs.Ī person can learn to drive the Proshifted/Faceplated tranny on the street by speed matching your gears. The faceplated parts are more forgiving of miss shifts, compared to the stock or proshifted parts. Trying to cut down the need to drop the tranny at all is my incentive for doing the faceplate mod on 2nd gear. In contrast, the fully Pro-shifted toploader was good for nearly 100 runs before it needed attention (mostly a new or cleaned up 1-2 sychro ring and some cleaning up of the 2nd gear lugs.) The Prosifted 2nd gear with faceplated 3rd/4th toploader was awesome in that the faceplated stuff looked practically new each time that I had it apart to clean up 2nd gear. I also recommend using Dino oil instead of synthetics as I found that my brass blocking rings overtime became less and less grabby and led to grinding gears. Other than that those do not know of any mechanical mods that will improve a sychro'ed toploader to make it work well continually at higher RPM's, except for maybe adding the big input which helps prevent twisting. The effect of that trick is short lived though as the engagement teeth are small to begin with and with fewer available the remaining will soon loose there edge. Since they still use the bronze blocker it shifts OK on the street. Some people grind away every other tooth or 2 out of every 3 of the engagement teeth and synchro ring. Of course you can extend the maintenance cycle quite a bit if you leave off the gas a little during a shift.Ī good clutch, good linkage, and shifter that are properly aligned will help to keep from damaging the internals and they are your best defense. If I made clean shifts each time, I found that it took around 50-60 or so flat footed runs before I needed to freshen up parts to maintain the full high RPM capability. If you miss a gear (which grinds the sychro's and the gear mating teeth) a little too often, RPM performance goes away and soon you will only be able to make clean shifts at lower speeds while shifting.
